Scientists
say a diet high in yellow and green vegetables
can offer protection against damage to eyesight
later in life. According to a recent study
of post-menopausal women, high consumption of vegetables
containing the carotenoid compounds lutein and zeaxanthin
was associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular
degeneration (AMD).
AMD is the leading cause of blindness in older
people in developed countries, and occurs when
the region at the back of the retina that produces
the sharpest vision deteriorates over time.
Healthy veggies that contain the sight-enhancing
compounds include kale, spinach, peas, broccoli,
sweetcorn, squash, and carrots.

Growing
up, John Carmody loved animals but never acknowledged
the similarities between companion animals
and animals raised for food. He had a life-changing
experience at the age of 15 after he saw terrible
images of the Canadian seal hunt on the front
pages of newspapers at his home in Ireland.
The shocking images jolted John into learning
more about animal cruelty issues and discovering
