According
to a new study at the Journal College of Nutrition,
the ascorbic acid in vitamin C can help prevent ulcers.
Researchers at the University of California School
of Medicine evaluated nearly 7,000 adults, finding that
almost one-third had antibodies against a strand of
bacteria believed to be the cause of most ulcers. Chronic
infection with this bacteria is an important risk factor
for both ulcer problems and gastric cancer. The findings
reveal that higher blood levels of ascorbic acid were
associated with lower rates of infection by 25%.
Higher intakes of vitamin C rich foods in the stomach help prevent infection and ulcers. Vitamin C is present in fruits and vegetables including pineapples, oranges, lemons, and bell peppers. Each year, 500,000 new cases of peptic ulcer disease surface in the U.S.. Under recommendations by the Institute of Medicine, women should consume 75 milligrams of vitamin C a day and men should consume 90. A medium orange has about 60 milligrams.

October
is the month to take some time for the animals! World
Farm Animals Day occurs on October 2nd (Gandhi’s
birthday), but caring people around the world get
active in their communities throughout the entire
month. It is a time to spread the message of compassion
and reflect on the animals who perish to feed the
world's "meat habit."
Inspire others to help animals! Request our colorful handouts (pictured on the left) in honor of World Farm Animals Day. These cards are most ideal for distribution at animal-friendly locations such as vet offices, pet stores, and animal shelters. Gently making the connection between animals we call pets and animals we call food, the card offers free vegetarian starter kits.
You help the animals each time you encourage someone to eat less meat or even transition to a veg diet. Each person who “kicks the meat habit” saves up to 2,000 animals in a lifetime.
