Flax seed supplements were found to significantly reduce cancer growth, according to study reported at an American Society of Clinical Oncology conference. Researchers examined 161 men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Also investigating the role of a low-fat diet (with fat contributing less than 20% of the total energy), the researchers divided the men into 4 groups: placebo control, flax seeds, low-fat diet, and the combination of low-fat diet with flax seeds.
Results indicated that the cancer cells were growing at a significantly slower rate (roughly 30% to 40% slower) in the 2 groups taking flax seed supplements than in the group on placebo or on the low-fat diet alone. The dose was 30 grams a day, which is about 3 round tablespoons, and the flax seeds were ground and mixed with food and drink. One researcher commented "on its own it has a mild nutty taste."
Flax seeds are one of the richest sources of lignan, which has several roles in fighting cancer. Lignan affects metabolism, has antioxidant activity, and is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids.
