Increased
consumption of whole grain products reduces the risk of being
overweight or obese, concluded a new study from Holland.
The results support the 2005 Dietary Guidelines to Americans
recommendation to consume at least three whole grain
servings per day. The study, published in the European
Journal of Clinical Nutrition, examined the effects
of dietary patterns in 4,200 men and women between the
ages of 55 and 69. Researchers found that the people who
consumed the most whole grains had a lower Body Mass
Index (BMI) and were less likely to be overweight or
obese. The researchers propose that whole grains help
in the prevention of weight gain because they slow down
starch digestion and absorption, leading to lower glucose
and insulin responses that favor oxidation and lipolysis
of fat rather than its storage.
Whole grains have received considerable attention in the U.S. in the last year. The FDA now permits foods that contain at least 51% whole grains by weight and are low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol to carry a health claim, linking them to a reduced risk of heart disease and certain cancers.

Jim
Morris, a former Mr. America, seems to carry the secret
to staying strong and healthy into the golden years.
Jim is 72 years old and, thanks to fruits and veggies,
his physique belongs to a young 20-something bodybuilder.
As a matter of fact, Jim says he's never felt better. "I feel fabulous,
honestly...I don't take any medications,
I don't have any pain. All my joints are wonderful." That's
remarkable when you consider he's been lifting heavy
weights almost every day for the last 47 years.
Jim moved to L.A. in 1969, got into weightlifting alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, and in 1973 won the title of Mr. America. He still works out an hour a day, six days a week. And his diet consists of beans, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. That means no meat, no chicken, no fish, and according to Jim, cheese is the worst.
