Diets rich in magnesium, such as whole grains and vegetables, help reduce stroke risk in smokers, according to a new study. Researchers examined the dietary habits of 26,000 male smokers in Finland, aged 50 to 69. Results indicated that men who consumed the most magnesium had a 15% lower risk for cerebral infarction, a type of stroke. The association was stronger in men younger than 60 years.
In addition to lowering blood pressure, magnesium may influences cholesterol concentrations. Foods rich in magnesium include dark green vegetables, brown rice, soybeans, nuts (almonds, cashews, brazil), and seeds (pumpkin, sesame, sunflower).
