Women who eat greater amounts of fruits and vegetables have lower likelihood of developing glaucoma, according to research presented at an American Glaucoma Society meeting. The Study of Osteoporotic Fractures examined the correlation between food intake and glaucoma condition in 584 African-American women.
Results indicate that fresh oranges, peaches, spinach, collard greens and kale are especially protective. The researchers found that eating three or more servings of fruit or fruit juices daily decreased the odds of glaucoma development by 79%. In addition, eating one serving of collard greens or kale decreased the odds of glaucoma by 57%. Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables can block oxidation stress that lead to cell damage in glaucoma.
