A
recent report from Johns Hopkins University predicts
that 24% of children and adolescents will be overweight
or obese by 2015. Plant-based options that are low
in fat and sugar can help turn the tide, and more
school-age kids are actually moving to a vegetarian
diet. The School Nutrition Association’s survey
found that U.S. school districts are revamping their
menus, serving vegetarian (52%) and vegan (16%) options
in response to this growing demand.
Studies continue to reveal that plant-based foods offer plenty of health benefits. Usually higher in fiber, which makes for a healthy digestive system, a well-balanced plant-based diet helps ward off heart disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. Encouraging children to eat well can have a positive impact that will last a lifetime.
